Georgia Taylor | Member Story

Georgia is 15 years old and attends Havelock North High School. Outside of school, she enjoys spending time with her friends and family and loves being around her pets. Georgia lives with her mum, dad and older sister and has a dog and two cats, who are a big part of family life.

Finding confidence through sport with DSRHB

This year, Georgia has taken part in netball and swimming, and also attended a multi-sport day with a friend, where volleyball was her favourite activity. At school, she has also played basketball, with her team winning the tournament they competed in.

Georgia says she really enjoyed netball, especially playing alongside friends who were always supportive, as well as the coaches who helped make the experience positive.

In swimming, she enjoys games in the water and high-fiving the teachers, describing it as fun and engaging. One of her proudest sporting moments so far has been learning how to swim backstroke.

What sport means to Georgia

Georgia enjoys sport because it gives her the chance to exercise, spend time with friends and learn new skills. She says she would encourage other young people with disabilities to give sport a go, think positively and never give up, with netball and swimming being great sports to try.

She is keen to continue participating in sport in the future and remains open to trying new activities, while knowing netball and swimming will likely stay her favourites.

A family perspective on inclusion and growth

Georgia’s family describes her as a real “people person” who loves being around her peers. They share that Georgia has always enjoyed movement and games, and having organised sport she can participate in at her own level has been incredibly valuable, with sessions often being the highlight of her week.

As a family, they actively look for opportunities for Georgia to be involved in group activities outside of school and home. They say the range of programmes offered through DSRHB has made it easier to support her involvement.

It has been especially meaningful for them to see Georgia’s self-confidence grow as she has tried new activities and experienced success.

They believe sport plays an important role in inclusion and connection, helping create a strong sense of community and belonging, while also providing opportunities to learn new skills in a safe and supportive environment.

Looking ahead, they would love to see continued growth in accessibility across all sports, ensuring more inclusive opportunities are available for everyone.
